Description of Classes

OUR MISSION at Yoga for Wellness is a focus on individual needs, whether in private instruction or group classes. We all have our unique needs and goals, and a single practice is not appropriate for everybody. Historically, in fact, yoga has been taught individually, teacher to student, not in groups – one teacher providing completely individualized instruction to one student.

Many of these classes are taught in the tradition of T.K.V. Desikachar, an approach also known as Viniyoga. The approach focuses on individual needs such as age and current condition of health. The practice supports growth in youth and in aging and also maintains and promotes continuing stability and health. In this breath-centered practice, postures are practiced repetitively with the breath before staying in the pose for any length of time. Modifications and adaptations are offered when appropriate. In addition to asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation are also included.

Beginner Yoga

Our approach to teaching beginners is systematic, yet gentle, with attention to individual needs. This class is active and flowing, while emphasizing the energetic quality of the postures and the importance of not straining. Breath work and relaxation are introduced right away, placing the focus on the development of awareness and one’s whole being. This class introduces students to an array of postures and their therapeutic benefits.

All Levels Asana and iRest® – Yoga Nidra

For beginner as well as experienced students, this 90-minute class includes yoga asana for all levels followed by iRest® -Yoga Nidra.

Integrative Restoration (iRest®) – Yoga Nidra is a profound transformative approach to meditation and self-inquiry. Practiced in a comfortable resting position, such as lying down or seated in a chair, the receiver is led through various techniques that invite a state of complete relaxation and awaken great potential for realizing one’s deepest desires. This process invites a letting go of limiting beliefs and conditioning and opens you to experiencing life more fully.

iRest® is recognized as a Complementary Alternative Medicine for insomnia and other sleep disorders and has been shown to relieve the symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and chronic pain. (Integrative Restoration Institute, 2014).

See iRest® – Yoga Nidra page of this website.

Gentle Yoga & Gentle Therapeutic Yoga

Gentle Yoga is for individuals wanting an easy and accessible practice. Often props or chairs are offered for additional support. Anyone, including seniors and beginner students, can benefit from this class and class where they can learn basic poses and breathing techniques which help with flexibility, balance and stress reduction.

Gentle Therapeutic Yoga Classes are taught by a Certified Yoga Therapist and are designed for those with specific needs. The Yoga Therapist offers appropriate adaptions of movement, breathing techniques, and meditation for people living with health conditions including but not limited to chronic pain, illness, or injury. The therapeutic practice provides yoga techniques that are supportive and promote comfort, stability, and ease.

Restorative Yoga

In restorative yoga, props are used extensively to support the body so that you can rest in poses for longer periods of time. Postures are usually adapted from supine or seated yoga poses with the addition of blocks, bolsters, and blankets to eliminate unnecessary straining.  This class is relaxing and renewing and very popular.  It is offered the first week of every other month in Jeanne’s and Lisa’s regular weekly scheduled classes.

Slow Flow

The Slow Flow class offers breath centered movement. An invitation to flow from one pose to the next can help students mindfully stay connected to the body as they move within each breath moment by moment. Poses range from gentle to more challenging and are taught with stability and ease as the foundation. Students will find this practice gently challenging yet safe and effective. They will most likely leave feeling energized and calm.

Custom Group Classes

We can provide specially designed classes in your home, office, or clubhouse. Students provide their own props (basics would be a sticky mat and wool blanket). Cost varies depending on the needs of the group.

Workshops and Retreats

Workshops and retreats are offered regularly. Watch for flyers in the studio or check this web site for announcements.
