How is stress impacting your business?

Employers worldwide face rising costs due to employee stress- related health problems. The American Medical Association reported that many U.S. workers have aches serious enough to keep them from being efficient on the job. Almost 13 percent lose productive timebecause of everyday pains, costing employers an estimated $61.2 billion per year.

The study, which measured nearly 29,000 adults over a two week period, cited headaches as the most common culprit, the cause of 5.4 percent of lost time, followed by sore backs at 3.2 percent, and arthritis and other muscular-skeletal pain at 2 percent.

Benefits of Yoga

We like to refer to the Yoga Journal, which has listed 38 specific and measurable benefits. Among these are dealing with stress and anxiety; creating inner peace, calm and presence, weight management, flexibility, managing pain and improved breathing.

A recent scientific review of the effects of mind-body therapies such as yoga found that yoga reduces markers of inflammation and stimulates virus-specific immune responses (Morgan, Irwin, Chung & Wang, 2014).

Another study concluded that yoga can be recommended as an effective intervention for reducing blood pressure (Haggins, States, Selfe, & Innes, 2013) and the American Heart Association (2013) stated that yoga is an effective complementary therapy for lowering blood pressure. A Duke University scientific review found that yoga provides a benefit in depression, ADHD, and problems with sleep (Balasubramaniam, Selles & Doraiswamy, 2013).
